Dr. Alexander Ariev Dr. Ariev (Professor of Medicine) is a fourth generation physician from a famous Russian
family. The family has had physicians working in St. Petersburg since 1820. His grandfather was
one of the first leaders of the Department of Therapeutics at the Medical Academy for
Postgraduate Studies (MAPS).
Dr. Ariev was born in 1954.He finished his preparatory studies and then graduated from Pavlov
Medical University in St. Petersburg in 1978. Subsequently he worked as an emergency
physician from 1978 - 1982. He became interested in nephrology and worked at Pavlov until
1984 and then was appointed Associate Professor at MAPS in the Department of Nephrology. He
earned his doctorate in 1987.He continued in this role until 1997, when he was appointed Head
of the Geriatric Department at MAPS. Dr. Ariev has credentials in internal medicine, nephrology
and geriatrics.
Dr. Ariev had the vision to create an up-to-date Nephrology Fellowship program modeled after
the West. He sought Western collaborators who have been assisting in the project since 1996.
The first Fellow has now been accepted at MAPS; the work is now focused on curriculum
development, teaching methodologies, dissemination of advances in medicine and use of
information technology to spread the word.
Dr. Ariev has published 120 articles, special-teaching handbooks and patented 3 innovative
methods for diagnosis. During his recent short Fellowship sponsored by the Los Angeles-St.
Petersburg Sister City Committee, Dr. Ariev worked with Professor Arthur Cohen (Professor of
Pathology and Medicine), UCLA, Los Angeles California. Dr. Ariev focused his attention on
renal pathology in elderly patients.
Another major effort of Dr. Ariev was devoted to review and revision of an extensive Russian
English Medical dictionary focused on nephrology. The dictionary is now posted on this web
site: In addition, he actively supported the ongoing operation and up dating of the web site. He
contributed many critically needed translations.
Because of his deep commitment to the project and his understanding of both Western and
Russian cultures, Dr. Ariev has been appointed as the liaison for the Medical Committee from his
base in St. Petersburg.
Dr. Ariev is married to a plastic surgeon and has 2 children - the elder has just entered medical school in St. Petersburg. |
